Notes found within the model:

“The figure of (human body) made of sandalwood with white lacquer, is used for the doctor ro acupuncture and canterize. It was made during the reign of the emperor Yung Cheng in his 7th year (AD 1729). Inside the box are pasted two yellow strips of paper, which was an imperial degree to his minister to have the figure made and to the manufacturer to make it, Wi Ying Tien and all his official titles and names. There are three governmental seals on it. The imperial hospital, medical works library, and imperial household respirator. When the patient indicated to the physician where his pain was, the doctor then punctured in the spot nearest the pain as indicated on this figure. It was also used to instruct students in anatomy.
